Taking the KTX is simple once you match the right station, right train, and right seat.
For a first trip, focus on this sequence:
- book through an official KORAIL channel
- confirm the exact departure station
- match the train number and departure time at the station
- re-check the current platform or track
- confirm your car and seat
- keep your ticket available during the journey
- use KORAIL staff or official refund or rebooking channels if something goes wrong
KTX is KORAIL’s high-speed rail service. It is not a general name for every train in Korea.
Book the correct station, not just the correct city
Use an official KORAIL booking channel, such as the KORAIL website, mobile service, ticket machine, or station counter.
International visitors can use KORAIL’s foreign-language booking channels, and overseas-issued credit cards are supported through official foreigner-facing booking options.
When you book, check:
- departure station
- destination station
- date and departure time
- train number
The exact station name matters.
A large city can have more than one major rail station, so choosing the right city does not necessarily mean every station there serves your train.
Since September 1, 2026, Korea’s high-speed rail system has operated under an integrated structure that includes Suseo-origin and Suseo-destination services.
Older advice that treats “KTX = Seoul/Yongsan” and “SRT = Suseo” as permanently separate systems should no longer be used as a general rule.
Match the train number before you go to the platform
After arriving at the station, check the current departure information.
Match your ticket against:
- train number
- destination
- departure time
- current platform or track
The platform is an operational detail and can change, so use the current station board, signage, announcements, or official KORAIL information rather than relying on an old screenshot or saved platform number.
You do not need airport-style check-in for an ordinary KTX journey, but arrive with enough time to find the departure information and reach the correct platform without rushing.
Check your car and seat before boarding
For a reserved-seat ticket, your ticket identifies the car and seat you should use.
Before boarding, check the car number and seat number.
Where station signage shows car positions, use it to wait near the correct part of the platform.
Once on board, use the seat listed on your ticket and keep the ticket available in case it is needed for inspection.
Do not assume that every KTX passenger must scan a QR code at a gate or show a passport before boarding. Ticket-control methods can vary by ticket or service type.
What should you know about luggage?
KORAIL’s current carry-on rule allows passengers to bring up to two pieces of luggage that they can carry themselves.
Luggage should not occupy another passenger’s seat or block the aisle.
If you are traveling with large suitcases, plan how you will manage them yourself rather than assuming there is unlimited luggage space.
What if you miss your KTX?
A missed KTX ticket does not automatically become a ticket for the next train.
Before departure, refund or change options may be available through KORAIL’s official online or mobile channels.
After departure, handling can depend on the ticket and timing, and a penalty may apply.
If you miss the train, use KORAIL’s official refund or rebooking process rather than boarding the next KTX with the old ticket unless KORAIL has explicitly changed or reissued it.
What if you board the wrong train?
Tell the train staff as soon as you realize the mistake.
Ask for help rather than waiting until the train has traveled much farther.
The correct fare, ticket, or next-stop handling depends on the actual situation, so follow the instructions given by KORAIL staff.
Do you need to book early?
Ordinary booking schedules can differ from major holiday periods.
During busy travel periods such as Seollal or Chuseok, KORAIL can use a separate reservation schedule, and tickets can be highly competitive.
Do not rely on one permanent holiday booking date or fixed booking window. Check the current KORAIL notice for your travel period.
